Tips for Working from Home

I’m lucky that I can work from home running Piqued PR. It allows me to be here for deliveries, Marty & Miles as well as last minute things like when the electrician comes. However, many new entrepreneurs have recently asked me about this with concerns of their owns on staying focused, motivated and not going crazy working along from home so I thought I’d share some of my tips as now I’ve been doing this for at least 5 years.

  1. Don’t sleep in! Every morning I wake up at 7:30 when Will does or earlier. I never go back to sleep or sleep in. It’s become a routine so I don’t even question it anymore.
  2. Never work from bed or the sofa, instead have a designated work space. I’m lucky because I do have a full home office but I know if you live in a city apartment you might not have such. As long as you have a designated space that you know when you sit down its time to GST you’ll be fine. I only work in bed or on the sofa when I’m sick or when everyone else is having a snow day work from home day.
  3. Have a group of friends who also work from home or are entrepreneurs. This support group you can text when you aren’t feeling motivated, need some advice or are even great to grab lunch with or work together from a coffee shop when you need to switch things up.
  4. I’ll be honest, most days I’m working from home in Lululemon and no makeup on. I’m not one of those that believe you have to be fully dressed to work from home, although I don’t suggest wearing your pjs all day. I think a perk of working from home is you don’t have to be dressed up everyday so take advantage of it!
  5. Do what is best for you. I prefer to work out in the late morning or lunch time. While most people can’t do this and I used to feel guilty I prefer this time because it breaks up my day, let’s me be social and is less crowded than early morning or evening classes.
  6. If you’re feeling in a rut then switch things up. Go to a coffee shop and work a few hours for a change of scenery, I do this at least once a month. Take a midday walk to get some fresh air and nature. Or maybe step away and do laundry. You have to think that working in a traditional office you’re wasting some time talking to co-workers, walking to the water cooler, taking a full lunch break, etc. so if you need a 30 minute break working from home, its no big deal!

I hope this helped all of you that work from home and feel free to email me with any questions!
